Never have we seen a see-through fireplace jutting from a second story room. This one is part of a large remodel; the front of the house is in a Mediterranean stucco style, while the rear of the house was first taken out, then expanded and built up another story with a contemporary stucco, slate and wood facade.
“I didn’t design the overall architectural construct,” says designer and associate AIA member SoYoung Mack, “that was Feldman Architecture. But I chose the finishes and did the entire interior of the home. I used the same materials on the interior as the exterior,” she says, “which is the Brazilian multicolored granite in a random stacked, horizontal pattern.”
The home is in San Francisco and is about 3,500 sq. ft. in size. This is a city lot, so there’s not much room in the backyard. “It’s basically slate, poured concrete and Astro turf,” she says. “The patch of Astro turf is for the boys, who are 10 and 12 years old.”
On the interior, there is a glass door that slides on a long iron rail to close off the fireplace. Another nice touch is the recessed grill and sideburner below the fireplace.
