Parting Shot: Sophisticated Romance

It’s called Twin Farms; it’s in Barnard, Vermont, and it’s the former estate of Nobel-prize winning novelist Sinclair Lewis and his journalist wife Dorothy Thompson. The couple enjoyed many seasons there beginning in 1928 and for the next 30 years, during which time many literary and political friends stopped by for discussions and entertainment.

The property consists of 300 acres on which sit 10 superb cottages, six rooms and four suites. It has won numerous awards, including the Forbes five-star award for 17 straight years. Here you can hike, bike, fish, ski, canoe, barbecue, dine superbly and drink impeccably.

As one writer put it, “This is summer camp for adults.”

Each cottage has a theme that is played out in its architecture, furnishings and (multi-million dollar) artwork.

Pictured above in the first-floor bedroom of the Aviary cottage is a hot tub next to a fieldstone fireplace.

Aviary was designed by noted architect Peter Bohlin and is constructed of glass, stone and cedar timbers, with floor to ceiling windows. Furnishings are of wood and leather. A sitting room on the second level includes a writing desk and wood stove – a perfect retreat among the treetops.

Picture the above image with snow falling gently onto an already-white landscape. Now, that’s romantic!
