Close to two-thirds (62%) of hearth retailers reported increased sales over June 2013. For patio furnishings retailers, however, more than four of 10 had negative sales comparisons with a year ago. |
13 MONTH YEAR-OVER-YEAR RETAILER SALES |
For whatever the reasons, more hearth retailers should be smiling rather than frowning. Although overall sales of patio furnishings improved over last June, the percentage of retailers down from a year ago (see above chart) was not encouraging.
Retailer Comments
Northeast
Connecticut: (Hearth) “Busiest year since 2008. Things looking great for 2014-2015 heating season. We’re gearing up for a big year. Pellet stoves taking lead, then wood, then gas and coal.”
Massachusetts: (Hearth) “June was very strong for us both in gross and in profits. July is starting out sluggish already. Let’s hope it picks up to carry us through the summer.”
Maine: (Hearth, Patio, BBQ) “Sluggish barbecue sales. Overall sales down from previous year-to-date.”
Maine: (Hearth) “Another strong month.” New Jersey: (Hearth) “Builders are building! Showroom is steady for this time of year.”
New Jersey: (Patio, BBQ, Spa/Hot Tubs) “Total store was up 30 percent.” New York: (Hearth, Patio, BBQ, Spas/Hot Tubs) “The season is still picking up pretty good. The sales are moderate in price but the volume is there.”
New York: (Hearth) “Still selling woodburning products this month in addition to gas fireplaces. This month’s numbers include three high-ticket products. People seem to be spending a little freer these days.”
New York: (Hearth) “June was a slow month for us, no hearth sales to speak of. We had many interested visitors in our store, took some deposits and made several estimates. The future looks good.”
Pennsylvania: (Hearth) “The brutal winter continues to pay dividends. Showroom traffic is steady. Installation crews are booked out three weeks. Hired additional installers and hoping to be able to handle the upcoming season.”
Pennsylvania: (Hearth, BBQ) “Let’s talk about the weather – remember January and February? Demand is still strong and installations are out three weeks. Hurrah!”
Pennsylvania: (Patio, Spas/Hot Tubs) “Patio sales – spring was real good, now mid-June and start of July in Northeast is 30-50 percent off. We are advertising more and still not selling.”
Pennsylvania: (Hearth, BBQ) “Steady floor traffic with wood and gas inserts leading in sales; people have not forgotten the harsh winter and blackouts of last year. Outdoor fireplaces have slowed a bit but fireside chat pits and grill islands are still strong.”
Pennsylvania: (Hearth) “Very slow compared with month-to-date. Traffic for us has been on pools and pool products. Customers are waiting to see if there is a fall promotion.”
Vermont: (Hearth) “Tremendous June with orders up 100 percent, causing installations to be booked out four weeks already. New home construction and remodeling coupled with memories of last winter are the driving forces. We are optimistic about the year, however, one bad week in October can wipe out the gain.”
