Parting Shot: Outdoor Sleeping

We speak of “outdoor living” quite a bit, but seldom do we speak of “outdoor sleeping.” In Switzerland, a company called “Null Stern – the only star is you” is creating a hotel chain by putting up single Outdoor Rooms throughout the country. Null Stern (No Star) refers to the manner in which hotels are rated.

The creators of the enterprise are conceptual artists Frank and Patrik Riklin, and hospitality professional Daniel Charbonnier.

The trio’s first effort took place underground in 2008, when they created “the first zero star hotel in the world” in an abandoned nuclear bunker in Switzerland. On July 2, 2016, the three partners pushed their idea even further; they said goodbye to below-ground living and hello to the stars with the motto: zero real estate.

The alfresco hotel is made up of just a single “room” containing a double bed, a tile floor, two end tables, and two lamps. A club of Modern Butlers wearing white gloves and bow ties ensures that each guest receives a warm welcome.

According to Charbonnier, “The essence and the spirit of the concept is to put the guest at the center of the experience and to focus on the intangible by reducing everything else to the minimum.” The partners plan to implement this new version of their concept across different regions of Switzerland.

Local residents, who welcome guests while bringing an innovative spirit to the hospitality sector, will manage this revamped version of the original concept. The “owner” of the double bed is the region in which it is located.

This experience can be yours for only $250 a night. Go to www.nullsternhotel.com.
