Leave it to Frank Lloyd Wright to make your jaw drop, your eyes bulge, and your mind crank into third gear. The man knows how to set a stage – or a restaurant.

This is the Wigwam dining room in the Nakoma Golf Resort & Spa in Clio, California, a bit north of Lake Tahoe; it’s the only clubhouse designed by Wright.

In competition with the stunning scenery of the Sierra Nevada range, he proves he can hold his own. The stunning Wigwam Room, with its four-sided fireplace and impressive towering ceiling, creates a surprisingly cozy atmosphere, and it’s proof once again that fire is the central attraction, the tie that binds.

If you happen to be a golfer, there is no better experience than a fabulous golf course in a spectacular setting. Nakoma’s 18-hole championship course, the Dragon, made its debut as one of America’s Top 75 courses, according to Golf World. Designed by Robin Nelson, who also designed the famous Dunes at Mauna Lani on the Big Island of Hawaii, this is a course you won’t soon forget. Nor will you forget the Wigwam Room.
