365 Grilling - It's a Canadian Thing!
Friday, December 19, 2014
Brrrrr! Winter is here, but when it comes to grilling Canadians don't fear the cold. According to the recent Weber Canadian GrillWatch survey, (40%) of Canadians consider themselves all-season grillers, with one-third of respondents grilling in below-freezing temperatures. In addition, (13%) of Canadian grill owners will barbecue on Christmas Day and on New Year's Day/Eve.
Top reasons for grilling outdoors during freezing temperatures are:
- Certain foods just HAVE to be grilled (55%)
- Everything tastes better grilled (53%)
- Real grillers don't let the cold stop them (38%)
In addition, the experts at Weber offer these timely tips for your seasonal grilling pleasure.“Looking isn't cooking, so keep that lid closed,” says Chef Clive. “Lifting the lid reduces the internal temperature of the cooking box, which prolongs cooking time. Trust your thermometer and use a timer.”
- Make sure you bundle up, but remember to avoid scarfs, tassels or other loose clothing items that could come in contact with the grill during use.
- Make sure you clear a path to your grill and remove all snow and ice before ignition. Make sure there is ample room around your grill so you can move around freely. Throw some salt down if necessary.
- In below-freezing temperatures, plan on doubling the time it typically takes to pre-heat the grill in warmer weather months.
- Charcoal lovers should always be prepared with extra briquettes in cold weather. Grilling time may need to be extended or the grill may need a little extra fuel to reach the right temperature, so remember to add briquettes as necessary to maintain a consistent temperature.
- Position gas grills so the wind is perpendicular to the gas flow, or is situated at a 90-degree angle to the wind. This will help control the temperature inside the grill.
- Never grill inside your garage or under an overhang. Grilling safely is a priority, so be sure your grill is at least five feet away from all combustible materials and is in a well-ventilated area.
