VINS Receives $100k Gift
for Environmental Education

Friday, August 25, 2017

From Vermont Business magazine

The Murray Howell Foundation presented a $100,000 gift to the Vermont Institute of Natural Science in May 2017 in honor of Murray Howell. Howell, co-founder of Vermont Castings, worked to enhance and protect the natural environment and to encourage individual initiative and leadership in environmental awareness. He believed deeply that environmental education for children is the best way to nurture an awareness that would grow into a lifelong love for, and commitment to, the natural world.

A plaque in Murray Howell’s honor will be placed at the VINS Nature Center.

Since 1987, VINS Environmental Education programs have been supported by a series of generous grants through the Murray Howell Foundation. The Vermont Institute of Natural Science is pleased to acknowledge his enduring inspiration and generous contribution to VINS and the education of the next generation of environmental stewards.

VINS is a nonprofit, member-supported, environmental education, wild-bird rehabilitation, and research organization headquartered at the VINS Nature Center in Quechee, Vermont. VINS’ mission is to motivate individuals and communities to care for the environment through education, research, and avian wildlife rehabilitation.

Open year-round, the 47-acre campus, adjacent to Quechee Gorge, features state-of-the-art raptor enclosures, exhibit spaces, classrooms, interpretive and universally accessible nature trails, and our wild-bird hospital. VINS places a priority on making high-quality, compelling, and fun environmental learning opportunities accessible to more people and communities through its onsite and outreach nature education programs.
