Florida Relief Update
Friday, November 9, 2018
Partners, Sponsors and Supporters,
We have been in Florida serving hot meals since October 13. We are seeing a decline in meal requests as we come down to our last few days. Many churches, civic groups, and other non-profit groups we have been working with have stopped their food service as the needs in areas have decreased. The Salvation Army is also decreasing their services, and they are focusing on smaller rural communities that still have needs. We will be serving our last meal on Saturday, November 10 for lunch.
We have already started the process of going through supplies and equipment to determine what will be going where. We are working to set some things aside as we will be working with Lowe’s Home Improvement stores in Panama City, Panama City Beach, and Marianna, Florida, and Wilmington, North Carolina, to put on a Thanksgiving meal that will be handed out the Tuesday before Thanksgiving (cold) so they can heat it up on Thanksgiving Day. We will be doing it family style. With the help of Lowe’s employees, we will hand them out to 500 families at each location.
This has not only been the largest deployment but the longest we have done. In the last 60 days, we have done over 1.1 million hot meals between Florida and North Carolina. As a reminder, our focus is always on serving the one meal that matters multiple times. Below are the numbers.
- Meals in Florida – 771,220 hot meals
- Meals in 2018 – 1,123,828 hot meals
- Meals since 2011 – 2,875,520 hot meals
Thank you to all our volunteers, partners, sponsors, and supporters that have helped make this happen!
