Hearth & Home July 2015

Parting Shot: Room of Curves

By Richard Wright

The client wanted an over-the-top outdoor living space designed as an outdoor movie theater,” says designer Ryan Hughes. “It includes a fire feature, a television, and a water feature flowing behind the television into a planter with agave plants.”

Working with a small space, Hughes was able to create seating for a large number of people by using the serpentine design of sofa and benches. The back walls are of white quartz; the three amber-colored, six-in. wide panels next to and behind the TV are of Hirsch glass that is backlit with LEDs; they form the surface on which water slides down.

The striking chimney is faced with translucent glass panels. In the ceiling is a light fixture that was hand-made in the Philippines of oyster shells. The home is in Tampa, Florida.
